Project management tips for every industry.
The team at Beachwood Custom believes that project management is the backbone of a successful organization. Good project management delivers the ultimate customer experience, setting your organization apart. Now the question is, how do you perfect your project management practices?
The most important step to project management is always communication – with both your team and your customer. Set expectations and milestones up front, and be sure your milestones occur frequently. Use an internal kickoff meeting to ensure everyone on your team needs a clear understanding of the scope of the project and knows who is responsible for each task. Do the same with your customer – have a kickoff meeting to explain the process and steps at hand. But don’t leave it there: communicate all project details in writing and provide regular updates to continue to build on the relationship and make them feel included. Always strive to under promise and over deliver.
For project managers, time management is your primary responsibility – for both yourself and your team. Setting milestones helps ensure that the important tasks are getting done, not just the most urgent tasks. To ensure your team is best managing their time, hold regular project check-ins (but keep them short). This will keep everyone accountable for reporting progress while also giving him or her the opportunity to ask for help if needed.
Your customer won’t believe their eyes – on time, and on budget? With successful project management, it’s possible. This requires your team to track your delivery from start to finish and closely manage the scope. If the scope changes, be sure to communicate that to the customer, get them to sign off, and increase the project budget accordingly.
That’s what it’s all about. The end result is the genetic makeup of the time and energy each team member puts into the project at hand. The time you spend engaging and motivating your team to perform at a higher level will make the different in the outcome you deliver to your customer. How do you motivate them? Have a clear vision that the entire team can believe in and feel as if they can contribute to. Let each team member know what you think their strengths are, and show them where they can contribute the most. Listen to them, challenge them, and most importantly, build rapport and trust.
